Admission to the Finnish International School of Tampere

The children who live in one of the municipalities in the Tampere city region and speak English as their mother tongue or otherwise have sufficient knowledge of English can be admitted as students into the Finnish International School of Tampere.

1st grade

The child's guardian can inform about the child's willingness to be admitted to the 1st grade of the Finnish International School of Tampere in the year when the child reaches the age of seven. Also a child who is one year younger during the same calendar year can be selected providing that the guardian presents an assessment of school readiness made by a Finnish psychologist before the child's participation in the aptitude test. Child's language proficiency is tested in February of the year of application for admission.

The aptitude test aims at testing:

  • The knowledge of the English language on the basis of an interview and various group exercises that involve listening comprehension
  • The maturity for reading and writing

Students are selected on the basis of the total points obtained in the tests. Only the children achieving the minimum confirmed score can be admitted into programmes with a special emphasis in the curriculum.

Furthermore, the child can be admitted into the 1st grade if

  • The child has studied abroad in English (during at least 12 preceding calendar months) or
  • The mother tongue of both the parents and that of the child is English

Aptitude test arrangements

An aptitude test is organized for the applicants during week 6. The date of the aptitude test is communicated to the child's guardians as soon as possible after registration at school, during week 5 at the latest.

During week 7 an extra test day will be arranged for reasons of cases of sickness (the guardian has to document the child's sickness by a medical certificate). The guardians will be informed about the decision on admission as soon as possible.

The minimum confirmed admission score will be communicated in advance to the child's guardians at a briefing in December.

The students are selected on the basis of their scores in the aptitude test. Only the children achieving the minimum confirmed score can be admitted into the programmes with a special emphasis in the curriculum.

The students who were not admitted in February but who obtained the minimum confirmed score in the aptitude test will be recorded on a reserve list in the ranking order. Should places become available students are selected following the ranking on the reserve list until the beginning of the school year in August.

Places available in the 1st grade classes at the Finnish International School of Tampere are minimum 20 and maximum 72. The maximum size of the groups is determined by the service contract.

It is possible to participate in the aptitude test once only. If the child's total score in the aptitude test falls short of the minimum confirmed score, the child cannot retake the aptitude test for instance the following year.

7th grade

The 6th grade students of the Finnish International School of Tampere can continue in the 7th grade class without taking an aptitude test providing that they attain a sufficient proficiency in the English language determined by the curriculum in the 6th grade.

A student can be admitted into the 7th grade if

  • She/he has studied abroad in English (during at least 12 preceding calendar months) or
  • The mother tongue of both the guardians and that of the child is English

Furthermore, an aptitude test can be organized in February for a student living in one of the Tampere region municipalities regardless of the student's background. The aptitude test aims at testing the student's knowledge of the English language: reading comprehension, writing and oral expression. Furthermore, the aptitude test includes exercises on mathematics in English. The confirmed minimum score limit will be communicated in advance in the guide for future 7th graders.

The students are selected on the basis of the scores obtained in the aptitude test. Only the children achieving the minimum confirmed score can be admitted into the programmes with a special emphasis in the curriculum.

It is possible to participate in the aptitude test once only.

The number of student places available in the 7th grade of the Finnish International School of Tampere is readjusted every year. It is possible to admit new students into the school only within the limitations of the maximum functional number. The maximum number can vary according to the number of the first-placed students.

Students can be admitted to other than the 1st and 7th grades of the Finnish International School of Tampere on the following basis providing that there are student places available:

  • The student has studied abroad in English (during at least 12 preceding calendar months) or
  • The mother tongue of both the parents and that of the child is English
